BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Construction of China's second third-generation AP1000 nuclear reactor will begin at the end of this month in Shandong province, according to a report by the official China News Service.
The first unit of the Shandong Haiyang nuclear reactor project is scheduled to go into commercial operation in 2014, the report said.
The Haiyang project will eventually house two power plants, each with a capacity of 1,250 megawatts.
China's first AP1000 reactor - which is based on technology provided by Westinghouse - began construction in Sanmen in Zhejiang province in February.
The Sanmen facility will also be the world's first AP1000 once it goes into operation in 2013.
China is planning to "localize" third-generation nuclear technology and develop its own brand of reactor by 2020, it said in a policy document released last year.
According to the document, China planned to raise total nuclear power capacity to 4 pct of the national total by 2020 - amounting to a total of 40,000 megawatts, up from 9,000 megawatts at the end of last year.
However, sources with the China Electricity Council told local media this month that the target is expected to be raised to more than 5 pct of total capacity.
